Hypothesis testing part 2: Type 1 and 2 errors and statistical significance (in-person)

Understanding the process of setting up and conducting a statistical hypothesis test is a fundamental skill in statistics.

This two-part workshop is designed for anyone who would like to learn or revise this topic.

This workshop is part 2 and we will assume that attendees are familiar with the material from part 1. If you were not able to attend part 1, see our online Introduction to Hypothesis Testing and read the sections on Null and Alternative Hypotheses, P-Values and Significance Levels. You can also book a statistics 1:1 through our website.

Part 1 will cover null and alternative hypotheses, significance levels, test statistics, p-values and what it means for a result to be statistically significant.

Part 2 will discuss type 1 and type 2 errors and “meaningful” significance vs. statistical significance. We will also apply the knowledge we have acquired to examples.
