Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
Our involvement in teacher training dates back over fifty years, preparing top graduates for their teaching career.
Our aim is to open minds to the realities and possibilities of teaching and learning by developing reflective, creative and inquiring teachers.
You will develop the skills to become a transformative teacher who will make a positive impact on the outcomes of your pupils. You will have the capacity to become future leaders in the profession.
PGCE Primary Education
Our PGCE Primary Education course prepares students to teach across the primary age group (5 to 11 age range). PGCE Primary combines expert training, outstanding school experience and a genuine passion for inspiring the next generation. In this one-year course you benefit from mentoring from both experienced academic staff and school-based practitioners. You will teach across the whole primary curriculum, understand how children develop and learn at each stage, and build the confidence to plan, teach and assess with the individual child in mind. You will learn an approach to teaching that will stay with you throughout your career.
PGCE Secondary Education
Our PGCE Secondary Education course prepares students to teach across the secondary age group (11 to 19 age range) in English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Languages and the Sciences, including Physics with Maths.

In our most recent Ofsted inspection our secondary-age teacher training was rated as 'Outstanding'.
The University provides trainees with an exceptional quality of training. Trainees report feeling that they can rely totally on their tutors for guidance, both professionally and personally. This support is instrumental in securing very high levels of success for trainees

School placement
Two-thirds of both PGCE Primary and Secondary courses are located in schools.
This includes two separate periods of school placement, where you work as a student teacher, as well as a chance to experience the teaching and learning that takes place.
